Looking for something to do over the long Memorial Day weekend in Encino, CA, then look no further than your own backyard. White Oak Terrace Apartments offers a great way to relax; sit pool side or take advantage of the gas grills available for you and your family.

If you are grilling remember these tips:

  • Clean Up – Clean the grill before and after you cook

  • Preheat the Grill – Get the grill warm for 15 minutes will not only prevent sticking, but will kill any bacteria left behind.

  • Direct vs Indirect Heat – A general rule is that anything that takes more than 20 minutes to cook should be cooked on indirect heat, where items that take less time can be cooked on direct heat.

  • Be Patient – Don’t continually flip your meats, flipping them too often or too early can result in sticking and items flipped too early (like burgers) can fall apart.

  • Love the Vegetables – Veggies are great on the grill, but be sure that you use a ??? designed for cooking vegetables or cut them large enough so that they don’t fall through. If you are cooking corn, be sure to soak it first so that the husks don’t catch fire.

  • Don’t Overcrowd – Overcrowding the grill could slow down the process and make it harder to flip. Also, for safety, flip meats such as chicken to a fresh area of the grill whenever possible.

  • Stay Chill – While you are chilling this Memorial Day, be sure that foods are chilling too. Hot food should stay warm on the top level of the grill and never keep food out for more than two hours and keep it cool or on ice whenever possible.

  • Safe Temperatures – These are some general guidelines for doneness temperatures.

Hot dogs—165 °F or until steaming hot, Poultry—165 °F, Ground beef and other ground meat—160 °, Pork, lamb, veal and beef—145 °F (followed by a three-minute rest time), and Fish—145 °F.
