Guidelines for Getting Your Security Deposit Back

Each state and in some cases cities have laws about what qualifies as reasons for keeping a rental security deposit in full or in part.

Your lease also includes details about the requirements as defined by and agreed to in your lease.

Here are some general guidelines that might be helpful if you are moving out of your apartment.

A landlord can deduct monies from your security deposit for:

Unpaid Rent

Unpaid Utilities

Unpaid Fines

Repairs caused by damage and neglect

A landlord is NOT allowed to deduct from a security deposit for the following:

Routine maintenance

Routine carpet cleaning

Routine painting

Routine Repairs

Normal Wear and Tear
